How about a little interior design?

Have you ever wondered how you can be happily going about your day feeling relaxed and playful, and within a split second your thoughts and emotions shift in a totally different direction without a clear understanding of how you got there? How did you move from one emotional space to another, and which route did it take you through?

More interestingly: how do you move to a place where sex feels exciting and something to look forward to? What triggers the jump from 'this is nice' to desire, arousal, or the LUST space (caps intentional)?

A few decades ago, Dr. Jaak Panksepp identified seven primary emotional systems—some 'positive' and some 'negative'—whose purpose is to keep us mammals safe and avoid a 'here, kitty, kitty' response when a tiger comes charging towards us. Without these systems, we'd probably be extinct by now.

I could bore you with the neurological effects of these systems on our behaviour in day-to-day interactions with partners, kiddos, family, friends, and colleagues—which I find astonishingly sexy and definitely part of the route to the LUST space.

But what's more interesting is how we can use this information to purposefully move across the seven spaces to get where we want to be in any given context.

This is where Dr. Emily Nagoski comes in. In her 2024 book, aptly named 'Come Together', she explores the seven-system concept and makes sense of it by visualising it as a floorplan—unique to you—where the spaces are interconnected and inform our movement from one system to another toward desire and arousal.

This idea of visualising our key emotions as a floorplan triggered my next Sex coaching workshop, which I'll be running alongside Massimo, Imagination Coach at https://www.massimocomuzzi.com/. Sex coaching and art—what's not to like?

Bringing the science that drives our key emotions as a starting point, you'll get to design your emotional home: connecting all floors and rooms to each other, decorating and furnishing your spaces as you like to make your emotional house a home.

Join us on 28 January for an evening of learning, exchange, art, creativity, and—as usual—cakes to help you design and visualise your emotional home and understand how you navigate your spaces.
